for Psychologists & Mental Health Professionals.

Terminal Consent:

Clinical Ethics in the Information Age

When was the last time you participated in a continuing education course described as

“gripping, stunning, riveting, and fun?

These are the reactions of medical professionals and journalists to the medical thriller, Terminal Consent. In an innovative way, author Michael Freeny, LCSW has taken the important subject of computers in healthcare and fashioned a highly entertaining, yet informative read. Although fiction, centered around a murder and a love affair, this exquisitely accurate book takes the reader on a harrowing journey though modern healthcare and new clinical ethics.

This fact based novel has a backdrop that is so accurate that the Florida Board of Nursing and the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling have reviewed and approved a companion CE course for 10 contact hours, 5 in Ethics. CE credits for Psychologists. Additionally, clinicians whose state board recognize APA approved providers can gain CE credits.

  • Goals
By successfully completing this course the participant will be able to
  • Identify the features of major clinical information systems in use today.
  • State the impact of changing fee structures on care and clinical ethics.
  • Describe the ethical impact of the rearrangement of clinical authority and benefit authorization.
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of medical informatics and expert systems.
  • Explain the flow and tracking of clinical information through multiple systems and databases.
  • Describe how standards of care are changed when computers create or infer conclusions from different data sets.
  • Identify the limits of confidentiality and informed consent within clinical information systems.

The course is broken into three parts, which we recommend you do in order. First is the novel Terminal Consent. It is fictionalized only in the names of characters and companies. All the technology, politics, contracts, laws, and voids are present, accurate, and in full operation. Fiction allows the writer to help the student glimpse complex systems through the language of metaphor, putting human form to abstract ideas, which is generally easier for care providers to envision and retain.

Part 2 requires the participant to read a short, non-fiction article by the author, originally published in the Family Therapy Networker, that polishes the reality of the novel with more precise references and documentation of actual systems and agencies.

Part 3 is the exam. The participant will complete the exam and return the answer sheet with their name to the author within three months of receipt. We will assist the student in any way we can to achieve success.

Upon successful completion of the test a certificate of completion will be issued for 10 contact hours for Psychologists & LCSW/LMFT/LMHC. The program address clinical and ethical issues in practice.
